Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has been handed a major European appointment after UEFA confirmed he will officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in Salzburg, Austria.

The appointment comes after Artan was unable to take part in the FIFA World Cup after being denied entry into the United States. The incident drew international attention because Artan had been selected for World Cup officiating duties and was expected to represent Somalia on one of football’s biggest stages.

UEFA confirmed that the 34-year-old official will now take charge of the Super Cup on 12 August, when Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain face Europa League winners Aston Villa at Stadion Salzburg.

The decision was made following discussions between UEFA and the Confederation of African Football, highlighting cooperation between the two confederations and offering Artan a major platform after a difficult episode in his career.

Artan has built a strong reputation in African and international football. He has been on the FIFA international list since 2018 and was named CAF Men’s Referee of the Year in 2025. He also officiated high-profile CAF matches, including the second leg of the 2025/26 CAF Champions League final.

The U.S. entry denial sparked debate about immigration policy, sporting fairness and the role of host nations in global tournaments. Reports said U.S. authorities cited alleged security concerns, while the decision was widely questioned by football observers given Artan’s international standing and World Cup selection.

His UEFA Super Cup appointment now gives the Somali official another chance to perform on a global stage. The match between PSG and Aston Villa will act as the traditional curtain-raiser to the European club season and will be watched by fans across the world.

For Somalia and African refereeing, Artan’s appointment is a significant moment. It keeps him visible at elite level and reinforces his status as one of the continent’s leading match officials.
