Kenya’s national team has suffered a major setback after defender Collins Sichenje sustained a serious injury while playing for Charlton Athletic against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup.

The injury has raised concerns over his availability for Harambee Stars’ upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Eritrea and Guinea in September.

Sichenje was forced off early after a challenge from Tottenham forward Mathys Tel. Although he attempted to continue, the defender later collapsed and had to be taken off the pitch on a stretcher.

Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones confirmed that the injury was significant and that the club may need to strengthen its defensive options before the transfer window closes.

“Collins’ injury is a tough one; it was a significant injury,” Jones said.

The setback comes at a difficult time for Sichenje, who had recently returned from another injury and was beginning to earn more playing opportunities at Charlton.

The defender will now hope for a quick recovery as he aims to return to action and remain part of Benni McCarthy’s plans for Harambee Stars.
